Spook Hill in Lake Wales is one of those vintage Florida attractions you just have to visit. The lore that surrounds it is wonderfully tacky and it’s actually really cool to see how it works in person. It’s in a fairly low-traffic area, so you can try it out more than once, and I’d recommend visiting Bok Tower Gardens (blog post coming soon!) while you’re in that neck of the woods!
On your way to Spook Hill, you’ll find Spook Hill Elementary with Casper the Friendly Ghost as its mascot (seriously!).
There’s a local tale that this mysterious dip in between two hills was caused by good old fashioned gator wrestling by a Native American chief (probably the original #Floridaman if he actually managed to get himself caught in a feud with a gator). In reality, it’s just an optical illusion that makes it seem like your car is rolling uphill when it’s actually not. Definitely go around the block and drive it more than once while you’re out there. It’s fun to try to figure out how it works. Just make sure you look where you’re going while you’ve got the car in neutral, *ahem* Jon.
I made a little video (complete with a blooper reel) so you can see what it’s all about. Hope you enjoy it!
Have you ever visited Spook Hill? What did you think of it?
