As a former American History teacher, the 4th of July has always held a special place in my heart. I love the flags and the fireworks (admittedly, I may not love them quite as much this year because of Graham’s bedtime…) and the general patriotic fervor.
There are several events happening around Central Florida that would be great to check out with your family. Most are on the 4th, but some aren’t, so hopefully you’ll be able to find something to fit your schedule!
This one is extra special to me because it’s where Jon and I spent our first 4th of July together. It gets REALLY crowded, so you’ll want to make sure you leave plenty of time to park (I’d go to Altamonte Mall and walk over) and bring some cash for the vendors that are always around Crane’s Roost.
Free live music in the town center begins at 5:30 and there’s a beer garden… I think that pretty much says it all! The fireworks begin at 9:15 and you can park and ride a shuttle over from Fashion Square Mall to avoid the traffic in Baldwin Park.
If you’re looking for something to do before the fireworks, Winter Park has you covered. The Watermelon 5K is great for the whole family – there’s even a free kids race! In Central Park, there will be a naturalization ceremony at 9:15 AM, followed by patriotic music, horse-drawn wagon rides, and a children’s bicycle parade! The Winter Park History Museum and the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art will both be open free of charge all day as well.
This event begins at 5:00 at Newton Park on West Garden Ave. There will be food, vendors, and activities for families in the hours leading up to the 9:15 fireworks display over Lake Apopka. Head over early to spend the whole day and check out some of my other favorite things to see in downtown Winter Garden!
Musical performances begin at the Walt Disney Amphitheater at 4:30 and the fireworks begin at 9:15. This year’s show is airing on Local 6 WKMG, so you can catch it there if you can’t go in person.
There’s plenty for the whole family at the Oviedo Mall with live musical performances and bounce houses ($5 for an unlimited wristband if purchased in advance). This event begins at 5:00 and fireworks start at 9:00.
Happy Independence Day, y’all!
