We’re going to be starting a new feature on the blog that I think will be really fun! It’s called “Local Mom Spotlight” and the idea is that you’ll get some ideas of fun things to do around town from other moms in the area. I hope you’ll enjoy learning more about the awesome activities Central Florida has to offer through these other moms! If you’re interested in being featured in the Local Mom Spotlight just send me a quick e-mail or comment below!
This post’s spotlight is on Amanda Morehouse. She’s got some great ideas and she actually has a blog of her own called Capturing Life’s Gifts. She blogs some about her adventures with her family around town as well as all sorts of great DIY projects! Make sure you check out her site and connect with her on Facebook (her Instastories are super cute!). Here’s her take on my questions for the Local Mom Spotlight!
1. Where are you from and (if you’re not originally from Orlando) how long have you lived in the area? What brought you here?
Originally I’m from Kenosha, Wisconsin. We have lived in Orlando for 5 years. The reason why we chose Orlando was definitely the weather, seeking new jobs along with change in our life. We liked the idea of being central, that way we could venture over to other areas and it wouldn’t be too much of a distance.
2. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your kids.
Hello! My name is Amanda. I enjoy being outside, DIY projects, reading (when I can), beach trips, and family days! I have a 15 month old son who loves to be outside. Johnny enjoys playing in water, LOVES anything soft (Teddy Bears are a big hit for him), and recently started playing with his Legos. Before being a stay at home mom I was a 1st grade teacher! Now I’m filling my days playing with my little one (or chasing him around).
3. What’s your favorite place to take your kids on the weekend? Why?
When we can, I like taking Johnny to Lake Eola’s Farmers Market. It provides entertainment for me and we always stop at the park so Johnny can play. I love the atmosphere over there.
4. What is your favorite place for some mom downtime away from the kids? Why?
Either going to the beach reading a book/napping, OR getting a pedicure. I think the common trend in this one is RELAXATION. 🙂
5. What do you do on your favorite local date night?
We like to change it up every time, but one of my favorite date nights was going downtown grabbing a drink and attending a SAK Comedy show.
6. Where is a place you’re always excited to visit, no matter how many times you’ve been? What’s so special about it?
Locally, it would have to be the beach! I love that we live near enough where traveling to the beach isn’t too far. It takes me away from the “stress” of life for a bit. I truly get excited every time we go!
7. What adventures are on your bucket list?
Going on vacation to Costa Rica and zip lining in the jungle!
8. What advice would you give to a family that is new to the area?
Orlando has so much to offer, so make sure to get out and seek all the adventures it offers (besides just theme parks). Also, getting involved in a community with other families helps to build your supportive network.
9. What is your favorite thing about living in Central Florida? Your least favorite thing?
I love how Central Florida has so many amazing activities you can participate in from beaches to natural springs, farmer markets, museums, theme parks, and so much more! I’ve always been someone that loves to participate in things. As for my least favorite, it would have to be the HOT summer months.
10. Is there anything else you’d like to share with other local moms?
If you haven’t already, make sure to search on Facebook for play date groups within your area. I have found that to be so helpful with socializing my little one, along with myself getting more adult interaction. Also, always make sure to check online for any discounts pertaining to museums and theme parks. (Teacher discounts are a huge success!)
Thanks so much Amanda! I hope you’ve all enjoyed reading her take on life in Central Florida!
