This post is the second in my series of Orlando Staycation ideas. Make sure you check out the itinerary I dreamed up for grown-ups here!
If you’ve got a weekend with the kids that you want to feel a little more vacation-y than usual, this is the plan for you. If I’ve written a blog post about one of the adventures I mention, I’ve linked it! If I haven’t written one I’ll link you to the website of the activity.
I had never been to a drive-in movie until I was an adult, even though there’s one as close as Lakeland. It always seemed like something that my parents would talk about from their childhood, but not something that was around anymore. The first time I went to the Silver Moon Drive-In I absolutely loved it. It was every bit as fun as I thought it would be. I strongly recommend visiting and taking in a double-feature. Plus, this is the perfect place to try out a movie with young kids since you’re in the privacy of your own car and you can wander around easily if you need to! You also can’t beat the price: $5 for kids 10 and up, $1 for kids 4-9 (under 4 are free!).
Relax with your kids on Central Florida’s best beach for families. This is the quietest, most pristine beach I’ve been to in all of Central Florida and it’s even faster to get to from Orlando than Cocoa Beach! Here’s a blog post I wrote about it!
Cheer on one of Central Florida’s local sports teams! The Daytona Tortugas (minor league baseball), the Solar Bears (minor league hockey), and the Orlando City Lions (major league soccer) all have excellent prices to make it affordable for a family to attend their games. Magic games are considerably more expensive, but they’re still fun! Here’s a blog post I wrote about a Tortugas game and one I wrote about an Orlando City game!
Convince the kids to sleep in just a bit (am I dreaming too big here?) and head over to Winter Park in the late morning to catch the Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour before you grab some lunch (maybe pick up some 4 Rivers BBQ and eat it in Central Park or stop by Toasted at the corner of Lakemont and Aloma for some yummy grilled cheese sandwiches). Kids and adults will love riding through the canals of Winter Park’s chain of lakes and hearing the stories that the guides tell. Here’s a blog post I wrote about this as well!
